LabLife Privacy Policy

The web site (www.lablife.org) ("the Web site") is provided by LabLife Software, Inc. ("LabLife"). By using this Web site you consent to the use of your Personal Data (defined below), User Submissions, Public Comments and Results (both as defined in the Terms of Use) as described in this Privacy Policy ("Policy"). If you are unwilling to accept the terms of the Policy and those in the Terms of Use you may not access the Web site.

Your privacy is important to LabLife. This Policy will help you understand how and the extent to which LabLife collects, uses and safeguards the Personal Data, User Submissions and Public Comments you provide at the Web site. Users are under no obligation to provide any Personal Data. If, however, you opt not provide certain Personal Data, you might not be eligible to access or participate in certain areas of the Web site.

Collection and Use of Personal Data and Information

When you visit the Web site, you provide us with both Personal Data (as defined below), which you knowingly choose to disclose, and anonymous Web site use information that we collect as you interact with the Web site.

Personal Data

The term "Personal Data" means personally identifiable information that you provide to LabLife about you, including your first and last name, institutional affiliation, country, postal code, and your e-mail address. LabLife obtains your Personal Data directly from you via registration, online surveys, or from other interactions you may have with LabLife.

You must be a registered user in order to access and use certain sections of the Web site, including the personal and group pages. In order to become a registered user you must provide us with an email address, your first and last name, your institutional affiliation. In order to participate in and create a group, such as a lab, within the group pages of our Web site, you will also need to provide us with additional information such as your e-mail address at your institution or organization prior to creating and maintaining a group. We may use this additional information to confirm your affiliation with them.

We use your Personal Data to notify you about changes and upgrades to the Web site, to contact you about your account, and to send you newsletters, online surveys and notification e-mails regarding special offers, certain events or actions related to LabLife or your account. You may choose to opt-out of these communications at any time by contacting us at info@lablife.org. LabLife reserves the right to send you notices about your account even if you opt out of receiving e-mail notifications that are not account related. LabLife may store and process Personal Data to better understand and service its users. LabLife may use Personal Data to contact you, and may also enhance or merge Personal Data with data obtained from other parties.

LabLife at times collects, retains and utilizes Personal Data about you and information about your usage of LabLife to perform market analysis and to compile and disseminate reports to third parties comprised of aggregated data that does not identify individuals or groups.

When you register with the Web site, you may set up your personal profile, form groups, send messages, upload images and information, perform research or work using your User Submissions and Public Comments (defined in the Terms of Use), and transmit information through various Web site features. We collect Personal Data so that we can provide you with interactive services and offer personalized features. For example, as a result of your entering Personal Data you can input your research information and data into our Tools (defined in the Terms of Use) to generate Results (defined in the Terms of Use). When you update your information, we may keep a backup copy of the prior version to enable us to refer to the prior version of that information.

Anonymous Web site Use Information

As you interact with the Web site, we automatically collect information that does not personally identify you, such as your type of Internet browser or computer operating system, the domain name of a linking web site to or from the Web site, and IP addresses (i.e., the number that is automatically assigned to a computer for Internet usage).

We also store certain information from your browser using "cookies." A cookie is a piece of data stored on the user's computer that is tied to information about the user. We use session ID cookies to confirm that users are logged in. These cookies terminate once the user closes the browser. We may use a persistent cookie that stores your login ID (but not your password) to make it easier for you to login when you visit the Web site in the future. Cookies allow for tailoring the Web site to provide better services for users. Most Internet browsers enable users to erase cookies from their computer's hard drive, block all cookies, or receive a warning before a cookie is stored. LabLife does not collect Personal Data automatically, but may tie information that does not identify you (that is collected automatically) to previously submitted Personal Data.

User Submissions, Public Comments and Results

LabLife allows users to control the privacy of their User Submissions and Results (both as defined in and governed by the LabLife Terms of Use). Users can set their privacy controls so that the User Submissions and Results are only made accessible to you or other users authorized by you. For example, User Submissions and Results that are posted, submitted or otherwise available on your Personal pages will only be accessible by using your user name and password to access your account. In addition, registered users will have the option to make certain User Submissions or Results available to select groups or to submit Public Comments that will be publicly available on community pages or the product pages. Users can also make User Submissions, Public Comments or Results available to all Internet users and third-party search engine crawlers. Although we allow you to set privacy options that limit access to your pages, please be aware that no security measures are perfect or impenetrable and you post User Submissions, Public Comments and Results on the Web site at your own risk. We also cannot control the actions of other users with whom you may choose to share your pages and information. Therefore, we cannot and do not guarantee that User Submissions, Public Comments or Results that you post on the Web site will not be viewed by unauthorized persons or will remain confidential. We are not responsible for circumvention of any privacy settings or security measures contained on the Web site. You understand and acknowledge that, even after removal, copies of User Submissions, Public Comments or Results may remain viewable in cached and archived pages or if other users have copied or stored such information.

Any improper collection or misuse of information provided on the Web site is a violation of the LabLife Terms of Use and should be reported to info@lablife.org.

Group Invitation Feature

If you choose to create a group, such as a lab, you may use our invitation service to ask another person to join such group. In order to use our invitation service, we will ask you for the contact information, including email address, of the person you would like to invite to join. We will automatically send that person a one-time email or instant message inviting him or her to visit the Web site and join your group. LabLife keeps this information for purposes of sending this one-time invitation, to register the person if your invitation is accepted, and to track the success of our group program. At any time, the person receiving the invitation may contact us at info@lablife.org to request that we remove this information from our database.

Use of Personal Data, User Submissions and Public Comments

If you become a registered user of the Web site, you will create your own profile and privacy settings. Your profile information, name, institutional affiliation, email address, profile picture (if you submit one), User Submissions and Results are displayed to those people or groups specified in your privacy settings. We may occasionally use your name and email address to send you notifications regarding new services offered by LabLife that we think you may find useful.

LabLife presents your Personal Data, User Submissions and Results to others who are permitted to view that information according to your privacy settings. Your name, profile picture (if you submit one), group membership and institutional affiliation may also be available in search results or directories across the Web site network and those limited pieces of information may be made available to third-party search engines. LabLife may send you service-related announcements from time to time through the general operation of the service. If you choose to submit Public Comments, they will be publically available to all users of the Web site.

LabLife may disclose information from your profile that does not identify you to third parties. We do this for purposes such as aggregating information about how many users are using groups, such as lab groups, or other features of our Web site and for enhancing or introducing new features.

Disclosure of Personal Data

LabLife does not sell, trade, rent or otherwise disclose your Personal Data to others other than as stated in this Policy without your written or electronically indicated consent. Our users generally are, however, individuals working at academic institutions, research institutions or other private entities or organizations. These organizations may occasionally request information from us about users that work for or are affiliated with them. If LabLife receives such a request, LabLife will notify you by either e-mail or phone if there is such a request from an organization with which we believe you are affiliated.

LabLife shares Personal Data with its agents or contractors for non-marketing purposes, but only in connection with services that these individuals or entities perform for LabLife. For example, a third party may have access to your Personal Data in order to support our information technology needs or help compile and manage the data. All LabLife contractors operate under federal and state laws regarding consumer privacy and confidentiality agreements with LabLife.

LabLife may, in its sole discretion, share or transfer your Personal Data, User Submissions and Public Comments where permitted or required by law, to comply with legal processes (for example, LabLife may disclose your Personal Data, User Submissions and Public Comments as necessary to comply with an authorized civil, criminal or regulatory investigation), to protect the security or integrity of its databases or the Web site, to protect LabLife's business or reputation, to take precautions against legal liability, in the event of a business transition (see below), to protect and defend its rights or property, for required institutional risk control, or for resolving disputes, inquiries or complaints with respect to your use of the Web site.

Your Consent to Transfer, Collection and Use of Personal Data

By using the Webs site, you are consenting to have your Personal Data, User Submissions and Public Comments transferred to and processed in the United States.

Changing or Deleting your Personal Data

If you would like to correct or remove Personal Data, User Submissions, Public Comments, Results or privacy settings, you can edit or revise your account by accessing your account profile. Your profile is available to you for editing each time you login to the the Web site. Personal Data, User Submissions, Public Comments and Results that are removed from your profile or the Personal or group (such as a Lab) sections of the Web site will be stored by LabLife for the purposes for which it was collected or to comply with any applicable legal or ethical reporting or document retention requirements, but will be unavailable and inaccessible to all LabLife users, including yourself. When you share information with others at the Web site, however, (e.g., sending a message to another user or posting a review or comment to the community or product pages) such communications generally cannot be made unavailable.

LabLife is an online community, allowing members to post content and information. As stated in the Terms of Use, LabLife takes no responsibly for any misuse or abuse that may be carried out by other members, including misuse of information that you volunteer in the course of accessing and participating at the Web site. Users should know that while visiting the Web site, they can be directed, through links, to the Addgene, Inc. web site and other web sites that are beyond LabLife's control. Users should carefully review the terms and conditions and privacy policy of any third-party website. LabLife is also not responsible for the privacy practices and policies of third party web sites linked to from our Web site.

Protection of Personal Data, User Submissions and Results

LabLife is committed to keeping Personal Data, User Submissions, Public Comments and Results secure and will take reasonable physical, electronic and procedural precautions to protect Personal Data, User Submissions, Public Comments and Results from unauthorized access, loss, misuse or alteration. Agents or contractors providing services to or for LabLife that may have access to Personal Data, User Submissions, Public Comments or Results submitted by users of the Web site (as explained above) are required to keep Personal Data, User Submissions, Public Comments and Results confidential and are not permitted to use Personal Data, User Submissions, Public Comments or Results for any other purpose than to carry out the services they are performing for LabLife. Notwithstanding the foregoing, no information transmitted or hosted on the Internet is completely secure, and Lablife cannot and does not guarantee the security of Personal Data, User Submissions, Public Comments or Results.

Minors

LabLife does not knowingly collect any Personal Data from children or individuals under fourteen (14) years of age. If you are under fourteen (14) years of age, please do not attempt to register with LabLife or send any information about yourself to us.

Business Transitions

In the event of a business transition, such as a merger, being acquired by another company, consolidation, change in control, reorganization, liquidation or selling a portion of its assets, LabLife may transfer, sell or assign information concerning user's use of this site, including without limitation, user's Personal Data, User Submissions, Public Comments and Results that they provide and other information concerning their use of the Web site, to the company that emerges from such business transition. If as a result of the business transition, a user's Personal Data, User Submissions, Public Comments or Results will be used in a manner different from that stated at the time of collection they will be given notice in accordance with LabLife's notification of changes section, below.

LabGiving Funding Program

LabLife uses the Web site to coordinate a funding program ("LabGiving") that connects donors with research labs and individual researchers that need financial support. If you wish to participate in LabGiving either as a donor or as a research lab or researcher seeking financial support, you must review and accept additional terms and conditions (the "LabGiving Terms and Conditions") that will be in addition to (and not in lieu of) the terms of this Policy. The LabGiving Terms and Conditions can be located here. In the event of a conflict between this Policy and the LabGiving Terms and Conditions, the LabGiving Terms and Conditions shall control.

Changes in Policy

If LabLife decides to change this Policy it will post the changes at the Web site and at other places it deems appropriate so that you are aware of what information it collects, how it uses it, and under what circumstances, if any, it discloses it. LabLife reserves the right to modify this Policy at any time, so please review it frequently.

Effective Date

This Policy is effective as of March 1, 2010.
